The basics

What is a Zero Volt Bedsheet (earthing bedsheet)?

The Zero Volt Bedsheet is a quilted sheet with a brass-coloured conductive grid across its surface. A cord joins the grid to the earth pin of a properly earthed socket, so the surface you sleep on is linked to the earth wire of your home. It is a home comfort product for people who want to try earthing (also called grounding) at night. It is not a medical device and not a treatment for any illness.

You may see the same kind of product sold as an earthing mat, a grounding sheet or a grounding mattress cover. The idea behind all of them is the same: give your skin steady contact with a conductive surface that is connected to earth, for the hours you are in bed.

The sheet has no motor, no heating element and no battery. It does not draw electricity from the mains. The only electrical part is the cord, and it should touch nothing except the earth point of a socket that has been checked.

The idea

How is an earthing bedsheet supposed to work?

People who walk barefoot on soil, grass or sand are in direct contact with the ground. Supporters of earthing argue that modern life, with rubber soles, raised beds and upper floors, keeps most of us insulated from the ground for almost all of the day. A grounding sheet is meant to restore some of that contact while you sleep, using the earth wire that already runs through a properly wired house.

That is the theory. What has actually been measured is limited. In one small pilot study, people who slept on a conductive mattress pad for eight weeks showed lower night-time cortisol (a stress hormone) in saliva tests, and most reported better sleep and less pain and stress in their own diaries.^[1] Those are early, self-reported findings from 12 people, not proof that grounding changes your health. Keep the printed instructions that come with the kit. They show how the cord, the connector wire and the tester are meant to be used with this particular sheet. If anything is unclear, ask us on WhatsApp before you plug anything in.

Step by step

How to set up an earthing bedsheet on your bed

Setting up takes a few minutes. The one step you must not skip is the first: be sure the socket you will use really has a working earth.

   Check the earth point first

   Pick the socket nearest the bed and have its earth tested with a mains tester or by an electrician before the first night. Many older homes have sockets with a missing or loose earth. If there is no proper earth, have one installed before you use the sheet.

   Lay the sheet on the mattress

   Spread the Zero Volt Bedsheet over the mattress with the grid side up. Sleep directly on it, so your skin touches the sheet. Do not put another bedsheet on top, because that would block the contact.

   Connect the cord in the right order

   Attach the cord to the sheet first, then to the earth point, exactly as the supplied instructions show. If the printed steps do not match your socket, or you are unsure, send us a photo on WhatsApp and ask before you connect.

   Leave it connected through the night

   Keep the cord plugged into the earth point for as long as you are asleep. Route it along the wall or under the bed frame, not across the floor where someone can trip.

5. 5

   Sleep as you normally would

   Your ceiling fan, cooler or AC can run as usual, and you can use a blanket or quilt on top of you in winter. Just never place the sheet over an electric blanket or a heated mattress pad.

Care

How to wash an earthing bedsheet without harming the cord

Unplug the cord from the socket, and detach it from the sheet as the supplied instructions show, before the sheet goes anywhere near water. The cord and its plug are never washed. Keep them somewhere dry while the sheet is being cleaned, and plug them in again only when the sheet is fully dry.

For water temperature, detergent, drying and ironing, follow the care label and the instructions supplied with the sheet. We have not been given separate wash settings, so we do not suggest any of our own.

• Look over the sheet, cord and plug from time to time. If the grid is torn or the cord is cracked or bent at the plug, stop using it and contact us.
• Store the cord coiled loosely, not knotted or tightly wrapped.
• Keep oils, creams and spilled drinks off the grid area where you can, so the sheet needs washing less often.

Evidence

Does sleeping grounded do anything? What the studies show

The honest answer is that nobody knows yet. The research on grounding during sleep is small, short and mostly based on what people report about themselves.

Put together, this means large, placebo-controlled trials are still missing. A good night on a grounding sheet could come from the sheet, from a calmer routine, or simply from expecting to sleep better. We sell the sheet as a supportive lifestyle product that some people find relaxing, and we do not promise any health result.

Who might like an earthing bedsheet, and who should ask a doctor first

The sheet may suit adults who are curious about grounding, who like the idea of a quiet, no-power addition to their bedtime routine, and who have a socket near the bed with a tested earth.

It is also not a good fit for a home where the wiring has no reliable earth and none can be installed, or where young children or pets would play with the cord.
